[Urging The Save Mart Companies to Reconsider Plan to Close a Lucky Supermarket]
Resolution urging The Save Mart Companies to reconsider plans to close a Lucky Supermarket at 1750 Fulton Street in the Western Addition on September 11, 2026.
WHEREAS, Th e Save Mart Companies, operator of Lucky Supermarkets, has announced that the Lucky grocery store located at 1750 Fulton Street in San Francisco’s historic Western Addition neighborhood will permanently close on or around September 11, 2026; and
WHEREAS, T he announcement of the closure of this grocery store has raised serious concerns among community members who rely on this store for convenient access to groceries, fresh produce, and basic necessities; and
WHEREAS, The Lucky Supermarket at 1750 Fulton Stre et serves residents across the Western Addition, Fillmore, Alamo Square, North of Panhandle, and surrounding neighborhoods, including many seniors, families, students, and residents without reliable access to a car; and
WHEREAS, The Safeway located at 1335 Webster Street in the Fillmore District closed in 2025, eliminating the neighborhood’s primary full-service grocery store and significantly reducing grocery access in the Western Addition and surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, The closure of the Lucky Supermarket at 1750 Fulton Street would further reduce the already limited number of full-service grocery stores serving residents in the Western Addition and Fillmore neighborhoods and deepen concerns about the emergence of a food desert in the heart of t he Western Addition; and
WHEREAS, The Lucky store at 1750 Fulton Street is located along major transit routes and is accessible by foot, bus, and bicycle for residents who rely on nearby grocery options for their daily needs; and
WHEREAS, Access to afforda ble and nutritious food is essential for public health and community well-being, and limited food access contributes to increased food insecurity and negative health outcomes; now, therefore, be it
RESOLved, That the Board of Supervisors urges The Save Mar t Companies to reconsider its plans to close the Lucky Supermarket at 1750 Fulton Street, and to work with surrounding communities and City leaders to explore options to keep the store open; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors urges The Save Mart Companies to engage directly with the surrounding communities and hold a public meeting to discuss the closure, answer questions, and explore potential solutions to preserve grocery access in the neighborhood; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, Th at the Board of Supervisors urges the City and community partners to explore strategies to attract or maintain a full-service grocery store at or near the 1750 Fulton Street site, recognizing the critical need for neighborhood grocery access following the closure of the Fillmore Safeway.
